Sparta Commercial Services, an Internet-based sales finance and leasing company dedicated exclusively to the powersports industry, announced today that Michael J. Mele, 51, has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, replacing Daniel J. Lanjewar, who is leaving to pursue other interests. Mr. Mele joins Sparta from Aon Consulting where he served as Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration for the human resources outsourcing group.
Anthony Havens, Sparta's CEO, commented on the appointment, "We are delighted to bring Michael on board, as he brings a proven long-term track record in finance and accounting which will be invaluable as we execute our plans for growth and expansion. Additionally, his extensive experience will be instrumental in our strategic business planning efforts and in the functioning of our internal control programs."
Mr. Mele brings to Sparta over twenty-eight years of experience in diversified industries, holding executive positions throughout his career. Prior to Aon Consulting, he was an Executive Vice President and CFO for the Hobart West Group, a legal and staffing services firm, and prior to that a Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at ASI Solutions, a Nasdaq-traded provider of human resource consulting and training services. During his four-year term at ASI Solutions, he helped to negotiate the sale of ASI to Aon Corporation. Additionally at ASI, he managed relationships with the financial community and commercial banks and arranged $20 million bank financing. He was also responsible for developing successful internal control processes and cash flow maximization techniques.
Prior to ASI, he worked for Linotype-Hell Company, the North American subsidiary of a German printing equipment company where as the Vice President of Finance and Administration he had financial responsibility for leasing and sales financing transactions. Previously, he was Vice President of Finance and Administration at Daimler-Benz's AEG Electronics North American unit. He moved to Daimler-Benz after serving for four-years as Director of Business Planning and Analysis and Divisional Controller at Mars, Inc. For seven years he worked in various senior management capacities at NYSE-traded Thomas and Betts Corporation, including Director of Internal Audit, Marketing Manager, and Division Controller positions.
Mr. Havens added, "Michael's finance expertise will be effective as we expand our originations department going forward. I am eager to begin working closely with him, and we are confident he will prove to be effective in business development, management advisory and relationship building at the corporate level. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Daniel for his service during our evolution as a development stage company and for his contribution to facilitating a seamless transition."
Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Mele said, "I am pleased to bring my capabilities and credentials to an organization with a well-developed business plan and an attractive market niche. I look forward to contributing to the company's growth and development and working with this management team that brings excellent, relevant industry experience to their roles at Sparta."
Mr. Mele began his career in public accounting at KPMG, formerly known as Peat, Marwick, in 1976, as a Senior Accountant. He was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in 1978 (currently inactive) and earned an MBA and A.B. in Economics from Rutgers University.
